Hornchurch boss hoping team spirit sells

McFarlane: Camaraderie is the key

Hornchurch manager Jimmy McFarlane has hailed the team spirit at Bridge Avenue and hopes it can make a difference next season when they hope to challenge for the Ryman Premier title.

The 2014/15 battle for promotion is likely to be contested by several teams again next season, like it was for the past campaign, and some sides are also likely to receive heavy financial backing.

McFarlane hopes the good camaraderie within the Urchins squad will help them attract new players who can make a difference next year.

“I inherited that team spirit from Colin McBride because when we were at Thurrock we had a great changing room,” he said.

“When you have got a close-knit changing room it helps because you are coming out onto the field playing with your mates. A good camaraderie is a must.

“The team morale has got better. It was good when I first took over four years ago and each year it has got better.

“What happens when you get the big, massive, spending clubs that are going through such a high turnover of players is that they never really get that camaraderie and that is something we use as a selling point.

“I always say to any new player ‘talk to any of my players, you are welcome to ring any of them up and ask them what they think about the club, how we do things and me and you can make your own decisions’.”

McFarlane has established what type of player he is looking to bring to the club next season as they look to solve their inconsistency.

Hornchurch may have secured automatic promotion in 2013/14 had they not been so inconsistent in the second part of the season and the Urchins boss will be looking for “seven out of ten” players to improve their reliability.

McFarlane added: “You need more seven out of tens every week than you do five out of tens and nine out of tens.

“You do still need those type of players because they are the ones who on their day can be the difference, but the other ones are the ones that keep ticking over.

“We will probably be looking for a different type of player compared to what we already have, but we still want good players because we are a good club.

“We attract good players and if it fits into our plans financially there will be a few new faces this year.”
