Ryman Premier: Enfield Town 0 Hornchurch 2
Hornchurch made it 12 games unbeaten with victory in north London last night.
And this latest Ryman Premier Division success will have given Jimmy McFarlane’s men a notable boost heading into the FA Cup second qualifying round tie at Spalding United on Saturday.
Urchins had their first chance of note after only three minutes but Stefan Payne, their hat-trick hero in Saturday’s win at 3-2 Leiston, fired over.
Carl Rook went close with a header and Payne sent another effort just wide, before the visitors took the lead on 14 minutes.
Joey May received a throw-in on the right and played the ball back to Frankie Curley, who fired into the top corner.
Inigo Echepare denied the home side a reply midway through the first half with a low save, while May fired over from 12 yards on 34 minutes.
And Urchins went close to a second soon after as May’s free-kick found captain Elliot Styles, whose glancing header hit the top of the crossbar.
Curley had a header from a corner saved on 55 minutes before the ground was plunged into darkness by a floodlight failure.
Play resumed after a short delay and Tambeson Eyong’s excellent pass was just beyond Payne on 64 minutes, before the striker curled another attempt wide.
Rickie Hayles saw a header hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce clear with 16 minutes remaining and substitute Ade Yusuff had a shot well saved moments later.
But Payne doubled Hornchurch’s lead on 79 minutes, drilling home his sixth goal for the club in seven appearances since joining from Ebbsfleet.
And that ensured another three-point return for McFarlane’s in-form squad, who will now look to add another £4,500 in FA Cup prize money to club coffers in Lincolnshire at the weekend.
Hornchurch: Echepare, May, Bentley, Hayles, Styles, Curley, Spencer, Eyong (Lechmere 88), Payne, Rook (Yusuff 71), Bourne.
