Hornchurch Jimmy McFarlane is still coming to terms with his side’s last-gasp defeat at Ryman Premier Division rivals Bury.

Urchins, despite having Reiss Noel sent off for two yellow cards, looked to have rescued a point when Jonathan Hunt’s 83rd-minute penalty cancelled out Sam Reed’s first-half header.

But John Sands scrambled home an injury-time winner for the hosts at Ram Meadow to leave Hornchurch empty-handed.

McFarlane said: “You keep analysing it and if you’re giving silly goals away, you won’t win matches.

“The first one should’ve been dealt with better. I was very disappointed with that.

“If ever it showed we were missing a marksmen it was Saturday. We created enough chances.”

Noel was booked for a foul on goalscorer Reed just before half-time, then saw red for another challenge on the same player seven minutes into the second half.

McFarlane added: “The first one I didn’t see, but their chairman said it wasn’t (a yellow card). Reiss won the ball and slid into the player.

“The second one was a blatant yellow. But whether the first one was deserved or not, you’ve got to be careful.”

Tempers boiled over on the final whistle, with Bury captain Sam Nunn appearing to catch Tambeson Eyong.

But McFarlane had praise for referee Paul Forrester, adding: “I think he’s one of the better ones. He likes to see the game flow.”
