Curley wants Hornchurch consistency

Midfielder rues missed opportunity

Frankie Curley insists Hornchurch need to be more consistent next season.

A 3-0 defeat at Lowestoft in the Ryman Premier Division play-off final ended hopes of a return to the Conference South at the first attempt.

But Curley, who missed the decider due to suspension, believes Urchins can win the title next year if they lift themselves in games where they are expected to win.

“Hopefully we keep the majority of the team,” he said.

“Jim will probably bring in a few new ones and let a few go but there is nothing stopping us from going on and winning the league.

“Especially if we can cut out the silly mistakes playing against teams where we are expected to win.”

Essentially the difference between Hornchurch winning the league this campaign and finishing fifth was the fact they failed to defeat certain sides they were favourites to beat.

Defeats, especially at home, to the likes of Harrow, Grays and Cray were extremely costly, as Curley added: “We have got a good group of lads here and we have let ourselves down in games we should have won.

“We lost against Cray and Grays and teams like that when we should have won and if we had we would’ve had home advantage in the play-offs and that would have made a massive difference.

“Of course there is no easy game in this league and you have to turn up every single week because teams want to turn you over.

“But if we were at home in the play-off final we would have had the crowd and the ref didn’t have his best game. I don’t think he wanted to upset their fans and that is what happens when you get home advantage.“

On a personal note, Curley enjoyed a fantastic season for Hornchurch and prior to the play-off final had played every league match for Urchins such was his consistency.

You can sense, however, that his dismissal against Canvey on April 21, which aw him miss the final, had soured his impressive campaign.

“It has been a good season,” Curley said. “But it was a bit of a killer against Canvey, getting sent off.

“And it wasn’t a sending off. The ref could have used his nod, but it happens. I’ve been involved in a few of these play-off games before and hopefully there are a few more to come.”
