Stalwart makes 350th appearance for Boro

Paul Clayton reached another landmark for Romford during their 4-0 win at Ryman One North rivals Waltham Forest on Saturday.

Ryan Imbert and Dan Jones netted two goals apiece as Boro recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

But Clayton, the club’s record appearance holder, would not have known about his 350th appearance if it wasn’t for a half-time message.

Clayton continued to extend his lead over Danny Benstock in second place in Boro’s all-time appearance list and said: “It was nice but I wasn’t even aware of it until half time when one of the supporters told me that it was my 350th.

“It is a great achievement to have and it was nice to break the record before.

“The plan now is to keep extending the record because I would love to have that for as long as possible, so the aim is to keep racking up the games.”

Asked what his favourite game in a Romford shirt has been, it is another landmark match which springs to mind, as Clayton added: “I think it was my 300th when I scored the winner against Harlow.

“If I was to pick out one game that would be my favourite, especially against a good side.”

Throughout his time with the club, Clayton has switched between midfield and defence and although he doesn’t mind playing either position he does have a preference.

But despite having played more games than anyone for Romford, Clayton does not expect to ever become their record goalscorer as he trails Benstock by 30 goals, having taken 350 matches to net 37.

“I’m 29 now but I’ll be 30 in February and getting older,” Clayton joked.

“I enjoy playing midfield though, but I’ll play wherever the manager tells me to. I’m not fussed but I do enjoy it in midfield because you are involved more but a lot of people do say I am a centre-half.

“When you get older you tend to drop back don’t you? But I still feel pretty fit and my legs aren’t going just yet so I’d like to stay in midfield for a little while longer.

“It has taken me long enough to get 30 so I don’t know if I will be able to beat that record.

“I’ll give it a go though and I have been taking penalties so you never know, but that will be hard for me to break.”
