Losing Martin would be big blow says captain

Skipper Jack Barry says Romford would not be the same without boss Paul Martin around if he does decide to leave.

Martin told the Recorder last week he may be taking up a new post and would make his mind up before the club’s awards night tomorrow (Saturday).

Whatever decision he makes, Barry feels Martin deserves a lot of praise for what he has done during six full seasons with the first-team squad,

He said: “I spoke to him on Wednesday and we reflected on what happened last season and had a chat about where our
future lies with the club.

“But if he did decide his time was up we could only respect his decision and move forward.

“It would feel different. Magic has been here for so many years and built up a brilliant squad with no financial income and you can only credit him for what he has done.

“I haven’t tried to persuade him because I don’t think it’s right to do so. He knows nobody wants him to leave, but he has to have time to reflect on things and make his own mind up and whatever the outcome, everybody will be behind it.”

Romford continue to look into the possibility of a new ground and Barry believes it may be the one thing which could keep Martin with Boro.

“It would be a shame if he did decide to go and the stadium got built because that’s what he was building a team for, but at the moment surprisingly nothing has come about that being even started,” he added.

Barry admits a Martin exit would be a big blow to him
personally, having been given his first chance at the club four years ago – and reserved special praise for the boss, adding: “He has had a massive impact on myself because he took me as an 18-year-old and threw me straight into the first team.

“I’ve played nearly 200 games now and I’m only 22 so I can only thank him for putting his trust in me.”
