Barry disappointed with Romford finish

Captain reflects on closing-day thrashing at champions

Romford captain Jack Barry admitted to a sense of disappointment after ending the Ryman One North season on the wrong end of a 6-0 thrashing at champions VCD Athletic.

It represented a third successive defeat for Boro – and fifth loss in six – as Michael Power’s hat-trick helped the home side leapfrog Witham and claim the title.

And Barry felt a few of his teammates gave up too easily, with nothing but three points to play for as they ended the campaign in 11th place.

He said: “It was a very disappointing end to the season and after the second goal went in I think a few of our players threw the towel in and decided they didn’t want to be out on that pitch.

“You can’t do that, even if it was the last game of the season we still wanted to finish on a high and we could have stopped them from winning the title, but it wasn’t to be.

“It just topped off the last month we have had with not putting in good performances and basically throwing games away where we could have nicked a point or nicked a win instead we had been losing.

But we went into the last game positive having beaten them in the season at our place, but as I said it wasn’t to be for us.”

Despite the heavy defeat on closing day, Barry believes Boro can look back on the season as a whole with some satisfaction after collecting 68 points, their best haul since returning to the Ryman League.

But he also believes they missed a good chance to push for promotion.

“You can’t take anything away from what we have achieved this season, yet again beating our points tally and going on an eight-game winning run,” added Barry.

“Most of the games were against teams in the top half of the table, it is just a shame we let ourselves down against the teams below us in the table.

“But we can only learn from that because we are a young team probably one of the youngest in the league and have been for a few seasons now.

“You can look at the season in two ways, we have over-achieved yet again for a club with no budget, but then again we can be disappointed with ourselves by not making the play offs because we had the squad to do it this year.”
