Latest news from the Essex FA
Footballers at either end of their careers will take to the field at Great Wakering Rovers in county cup finals on Sunday.
It is 40 years since Chapel United Veterans boss Jeff Short was playing under-13s football, but the club chairman’s enthusiasm shows no sign of diminishing as he approaches a third Essex final, facing Hullbridge in the Essex Sunday Veterans Cup.
Hornchurch under-13s, meanwhile, go up against Ridgeway Rovers Lions for the Cordell Cup and boss John Guyton is looking forward to the big day.
He said: “If we play well we know we can beat anyone on our day, but for me the most important thing is that the boys enjoy the whole experience.
“I want it to be a day they will always look back on and acknowledge what they’ve achieved. I look upon the County Cup as a young man’s FA Cup, and at this age it is the most important competition there is - it’s the one everyone wants to win.”
The Hornchurch club are chasing a possible hat-trick of triumphs in youth competitions this season.
But Ridgeway Rovers are no strangers to County Cup finals themselves, with Sunday’s encounter representing their sixth such showpiece.
Winners of the 1995 Pelly Under-18s Cup, the 1996 Cassells Under-16s Cup and the 2006 Andrews Under-14s Cup, boss Graham Golding is hoping to see the club’s name engraved onto the Cordell Cup for the first time.
“Ridgeway is a great club and it’s on the up again.” he said.
“Obviously we’re well known for having had David Beckham play for us as well as a number of other players who’ve made it professionally, but the club did lose its way a little bit.
“Now we have the FA Charter Standard Award and have everything in place to earn Development Club status. We’re moving in the right direction.”
Chapel v Hullbridge in the Sunday Veterans Cup kicks off at 10:30am on Sunday at Burroughs Park, with Hornchurch v Ridgeway at 3pm.
Admission for each match is £4 for adults and £2 for concessions, with a free programme upon entry.
