League Two: Wycombe Wanderers 2 Dagenham & Redbridge 0
Dagenham & Redbridge’s eight game unbeaten run came to an end in an eventful match at Wycombe Wanderers.
Both teams were holding their own before Scott Doe saw red for the Daggers following an altercation with both Stuart Lewis and Steven Craig five minutes before the break.
And Craig put the Chairboys in front with a 46th minute penalty before Max Kretzschmar’s effort settled the match.
Daggers were forced to make two changes to the team which beat Oxford United 1-0, with Blair Turgott injured and Ashley Chambers recalled by Cambridge United.
They were replaced by Billy Bingham and Matt Saunders, who was making his first start since the 2-0 win over the Chairboys at Victoria Road.
Saunders made an instant impact, blocking Kretszchmar before he could take aim.
The early possession was all Wycombe, but they failed to test Lewington and the first real chance came up the other end.
Saunders’ free-kick was flicked on by Brian Saah for loan front man Luke Norris whose header was hacked clear off the line.
Back-to-back corners kept the pressure on and Medy Elito saw a goalbound effort blocked, before the ball eventually went behind for a goal kick.
Matt Ingram gave the Daggers hope when failing to hold Norris’ effort, though he did gather at the second attempt.
Lewington had to be equal to a deny Matt Bloomfield after his shot from 20 yards, before the tie turned in Wycombe’s favour.
A weak back header from Saunders put the defence in trouble but Lewington came out to gather at the feet of Steven Craig.
The striker left his foot in, and that upset Scott Doe who then tussled with the forward and was shown a red card for his reaction, while Craig was cautioned.
Ian Gayle came in for his first start it what would be a tough baptism of fire for the 21-year-old.
He coped well as the Daggers saw the half out, but a minute after the break they would be up against it when Brian Saah was adjudged to have brought down former Dagger Stuart Lewis in the box.
Craig stepped up and though Lewington guessed right, he couldn’t keep the effort out.
It was all the hosts after that and the pressure finally told when Kretzschmar tried his luck from just inside the box and the effort across goal beat the outstretched dive of Lewington and nestled into the corner of the net.
Daggers battled on but failed to create any clear cut chances, and the closest they came were two off target efforts from Elito, while Norris’ free-kick struck the top of the wall.
The remainder of the match was a non event, with Daggers unable to get much going forward, while Wycombe seemed content with the 2-0 lead.
As the game entered stoppage time, Lewis went close to a third for the hosts when his 25 yard attempt hit the stanchion post behind the goal.
