It was a mixed first week for the local clubs in the Football League, but before we examine the weekend fixtures let’s look ahead to some discreet West Ham markets with the start of the 2013/14 Premier League season looming ever closer on the horizon.
Andy Carroll is 4/6 to net the most Premier League goals for the Irons in 2013/14. If he can get and stay fit, he looks a good but, but that is a big if and I wonder if the value lies elsewhere? Ravel Morrison scored twice against Sporting last weekend and at 20/1 could he represent the value with that season at Birmingham under his belt?
The former Manchester United midfielder has an eye for goal, although he only scored three in 30 games in the Championship for Birmingham last season. This is a big season for the 20-year-old, who is reported to have grown up in recent months.
His ability has never been questioned, but his attitude certainly has. He could just be the Hammers’ ace this year.
We have a number of markets on Andy Carroll’s league goals this term at BetVictor and bet: under-8.5 Premiership Goals 5/2; over-8.5 goals 2/7; under-10.5 goals 10/11; over-10.5 goals 10/11; under-12.5 goals 4/11; over 12.5 Premiership Goals 2/1; under-14.5 goals 1/7; over-14.5 goals 4/1.
The Hammers are 250/1 to be top London club, 14/1 to top the Premier League without the ‘Big Six’ (Manchester clubs, north London clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea), and they have been very well handicapped in our season-long Premier League handicap where we ask punters who do you think will be the perceived over-achievers in the division in 2013/14?
The winning team is the one with the most points when you add the points they gain at the end of the season to their handicap – apart from Chelsea who are on scratch. Spurs (+20), Swansea (+40) and West ham (+42) have been the best backed clubs ... but who do you fancy?
Premier League handicap: prices include: Tottenham (+20) 8/1; Swansea City (+40) 8/1; West Ham United (+42) 10/1; Norwich City (+44) 14/1; Arsenal (+12) 15/1; Liverpool (+20) 15/1; Southampton (+36) 15/1; Aston Villa (+40) 15/1; Sunderland (+40) 15/1.
The Irons are 5/2 to finish the season in the top half (10) of the table and 2/7 to end the campaign in the bottom half, and for the more optimistic supporters, the Hammers are 20/1 to end the season in the top six.
Dagenham & Redbridge play their first home game of the season against York at the weekend and after their 3-1 loss to the much-fancied Fleetwood Town, they will be looking to bounce back against the Minster Men.
They are 13/8 favourites at BetVictor to do so, with the visitors 9/5 and the draw 11/5.
Daggers are now 66/1 to finish the campaign as top Southern side in the division, 10/3 to be relegated, 6/1 to finish bottom and 7/1 to finish the campaign in the top half of the season. These are early days but a win against York would certainly help the cause.
If it was a disappointing start for Daggers it was a magnificent weekend for Leyton Orient, after their comprehensive 5-1 win at Carlisle United. Kevin Lisbie is now 40/1 to be the league’s top goalscorer with the O’s 5/1 to be top Southern Club (Brentford 11/10 favourites), 6/1 to finish in the top six and thus be guaranteed a play-off spot at worst and 8/1 to be playing in the Championship in 2014/15.
We may be accused of getting ahead of ourselves, but three more points against Shrewsbury at the Matchroom Stadium on Saturday would certainly be a wonderful start to the season, although you could argue that the heroics at Brunton Park will count for nothing if Russell Slade’s boys don’t make home advantage count against the Shrews. The O’s are 3/4 to make it six points out of six with the draw 13/5 and a Town win 4/1.
