The 28-year-old’s first-team opportunities have been limited of late, after initially starting the season as a regular in manager Wayne Burnett’s matchday squads.

He netted in the 3-2 League Cup defeat at Brentford, before also scoring in the 1-1 home draw with Exeter in September. However since then, he’s had to settle with brief appearances off the bench.

It brings to an end a four-and-a-half year spell at the club and manager Wayne Burnett told the club website: “I had a chat with Josh and we decided he needed to go and get some football as his chances would be limited here.

“I wish him all the very best, he’s spent a lot of time at the club and given good account of himself and has been unlucky with injury. I wish him all the best wherever he goes and I hope wherever that is he succeeds.”

The former Hayes & Yeading striker was influential in the club winning promotion to League One in the 2009-10 season, netting four in a famous 6-0 play-off semi-final first leg win over Morecambe.

In total, he scored 16 goals in that promotion-winning season, but was never able to reproduce that form on a consistent basis and was hampered by both illness and injury during the remainder of his spell at Victoria Road.

Scott’s contract with the club was due to expire at the end of the current season, and releasing him now will give Burnett extra funds to boost his squad between now and the end of the January transfer window.
