Midfielder Michael Spillane feels his former side could make the League Two play-offs and is also thankful for Daggers boss John Still.

Michael Spillane feels old club Dagenham & Redbridge can make the League Two play-offs and knows he owes boss John Still for rescuing him from Brentford.

Spillane left Daggers on a free transfer to join Southend last week but helped the Victoria Road outfit escape relegation last season and won the player-of-the-year prize.

And though he was disappointed to leave, he felt he left Daggers in a far better position than when he arrived.

Spillane said: “When I went to Dagenham it was always my intention to help them. They were in a bad place when I first went there.

“It wasn’t just me though, it was the whole of the team and it was a big achievement to keep them in the league.”

But Spillane remains confident that despite his exit, Still’s side can reach the play-offs and he could end up facing his former team-mates again.

“I hope they can still push for the play-offs, that was always the aim,” he added. “I think they can still do that with players like Luke Howell and Sam Williams there.

“That’s just the way it works in football and you never know, we could be playing each other in the play-offs and that would be a great occasion.”

He was also grateful to Daggers chief Still for bringing him to Victoria Road and believed he may have given up the game after a frustrating spell at Brentford.

“For me, he has been one of the best managers as he knew how to handle me and get the best out of me,” added Spillane.

“I owe him an awful lot as I wasn’t really playing football at Brentford and he took a chance on me. I may not have been playing football if it wasn’t for him.

“I have enjoyed all of my time there and I would just like to thank the Daggers fans for how great they have been. All the messages on Twitter really mean a lot.”
