Rhys Murphy: Why I decided to stay with Daggers and turn down Peterborough

Dagenham & Redbridge striker Rhys Murphy just felt the time wasn’t right for a move to Peterborough after turning down the chance to join the League One club.

Murphy has enjoyed a stellar start to life at Victoria Road, netting 12 goals as the Daggers sit 10th in the League Two table going into tomorrow’s home game with Scunthorpe United.

And though he was impressed by what he heard from Posh boss Darren Ferguson when speaking to the club on Monday, he decided to repay the faith shown in him by Dagenham and boss Wayne Burnett.

“When I went up there to look round I was impressed with what the manager told me and the work they are doing with the stadium and what the manager is trying to do at the club,” said Murphy.

“But I thought about it a lot and I felt the time wasn’t quite right for me. I’m happy here and the gaffer has given me the experience of League Two football and the games that I’ve needed and hopefully I can continue to enjoy the rest of the season with the Daggers.”

One of the Daggers unique attractions in bringing players to the club is that they give them the opportunity to showcase their abilities, and if they take full advantage, they can earn a chance to play at a higher level.

And Murphy is thankful that the club kept their promise to him and gave him the opportunity to talk to Peterborough.

“It’s only natural that you want to play at the highest level possible,” said Murphy.

“When I first came here the gaffer said to me if a club comes in for you from a higher level we’ll be honest with give me permission to speak to them

“They have kept their word and for that I am thankful but the time wasn’t right and now I want to focus on the football and get us back up the table.”

Such has been his success so far, time will only tell if another club comes in for him before the end of the transfer window.

But you can certainly tell from talking to him that he’s happy to be with the Daggers and he’s keen to get back to what he does best – scoring goals.

“The boys have been great to work with from day one,” he added

“It’s not just them, it’s everyone at the club, the fans, the staff, they have all made me feel happy and that’s been a massive part to how well we’ve done so far and played a part in the decision to stay.

“I am paid to play football by this football club and now I just want to focus on doing that, starting against Scunthorpe United on Saturday.

“The club and I have enjoyed a good start to the season, we’ve had a little blip of late but hopefully I can keep it up.”
