Players should be wary of future at Daggers, says coach Currie

Dagenham & Redbridge first-team coach Darren Currie feels some players at the club should be ‘wary’ about their future based on recent performances.

The Victoria Road side have struggled on home turf in recent weeks after defeats to both Portsmouth and Northampton Town.

And while some have been given a chance to prove their worth in recent weeks, Currie believes some should be wary, judged on recent performances.

“The performances have to affect our mindset going into the summer,” said Currie.

“This is why they are given an opportunity and we know how far we have come this season, with changing the style of play and what we have asked the boys to do.

“If we want to make the next step next season it is important to know we have got the right group of players and they’ll be some that will be probably a little bit wary after the way they have played recently.”

At times throughout the season the Daggers have been on the cusp of the play-offs, but when it’s come to the crunch, they’ve slipped up.

And while it has been a disappointing end, Currie feels they can be proud of their achievements having been the pre-season favourites to go down alongside Accrington Stanley.

“We was very close and on three or four occasions throughout the season we’ve looked at it gone ‘if we win the next game, we take that next step and get that little bit closer ‘ and we have never quite taken that extra step.

“But you know, clichés as they are, if someone would have said 57 points and you’d be safe with four or five games to go of course we would have taken it.

“But at the end of the day we have spent the majority of the season in the top half and that is something that we can be proud of and something which we want to improve on and that’s what we’ll be looking to do in the summer.”
