Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett has fired a warning to his squad – perform in these final four games or you could be out of the door.
The Victoria Road chief witnessed his side put in what he described as their worst performance of the season in a 4-1 home defeat to Portsmouth on Saturday.
And the Daggers chief is after a reaction as he takes his side to Torquay on Good Friday, or some of them may not be hanging around come the summer.
“We need to find out who is ready to come and give it a go and wants to be in this team,” said Burnett.
“The performances over the final four games absolutely shape my mind.
“There will be players at this club, whether they are under contract or not under contract, that will not be here next season because I won’t allow it to happen to this club.
“The people who don’t put performances in and don’t understand or have what it takes to be a footballer at this club.”
Zavon Hines heads a list of seven players – along with goalkeepers Chris Lewington and Jordan Seabright, defenders Gavin Hoyte and Ian Gayle, strikers Chris Dickson and Afolabi Obafemi – who all are out of contact at the end of the season.
And while those contracts continue to run down, Burnett reveals discussions will wait until the end of the season before sitting down with all parties.
“Do they want to stay? I don’t know,” he added.
“We haven’t really sat down and discussed the ins and outs of it all. There may be one or two that I don’t want to stay, so it swings both ways.
“I think we will wait until the end of the season to decide. I don’t think there is any rush to do so. One of two things are going to happen. They are going to sign, or they are not.”
And while there are likely to be departures, Burnett has revealed he already has his eye on potential summer targets, though much will be dependant on who leaves Victoria Road.
“It’s inevitable that players are going to come and go, but that’s the industry we are in,” he added.
“We have looked at players to bring in. I am not going to give you positions because it would be unfair on those that are here, but we’ve certainly identified two or three and we know the areas where we need to strengthen. Hopefully we can do that in the summer.”
Burnett added: “I’ll sit down with the board and discuss what the budget requirements are, but depending on who stays and who goes, that will have an impact on who we keep and who we don’t.”
