New Dagenham & Redbridge chairman Dave Bennett admits if he can enjoy anywhere near the same success as predecessor Dave Andrews, then he’ll be a happy man.
The 62-year-old was appointed to the position at last week’s AGM and to be nominated by the club’s board was a privilege for the former club sponsor, who used to own Compass Plumbing and Heating.
“I am absolutely honoured to be named as Dave’s successor,” said Bennett. “I have replaced a legend at this football club.
“I have not got the same football background as Dave has had. I have been watching live football for over 40 years but I just hope I can equal what he’s done and carry on the good work.”
On his time at the club to date, Bennett added: “Initially I came in as club sponsor, then I soon became a member of the management committee which was the pre-Football League delays.
“When we got in the Football League we had to become a limited company to become a director. All in all, I’ve been around for 15 years on the board sitting next to Dave and Steve and the rest of the directors.”
Bennett will get to work straight away at Victoria Road and will take a hands-on approach, but is aware of the financial restrictions the club has, with the necessity to sell players, while only Accrington Stanley are below them in the average attendances to date this season.
“We are in a healthy position at the moment with the Dwight Gayle money which is funding the club for the time being but that’s the sort of club we are,” he remarked.
“We have got to find the players and sell the players, but we certainly aren’t alone in that respect, there are a lot of clubs in that position.
“I am going to spend more time here at the ground during the week.
“I want to see how things work and who does what and if I see anything I think I can improve on and save some money I’ll suggest things. But I am not going to start demanding and stamping my foot.
“I think the club is run very well, Steve Thompson does a fantastic job, he lives the club.”
