Daggers fell to their worst home defeat of the season as they were put to the sword by a resurgent Portsmouth side.

The hosts were second best throughout as Danny Hollands and Michael Drennan put Pompey 2-0 up, and though Abu Ogogo gave them hope by reducing the half time deficit to 2-1, they were never really in the contest as a second for Drennan and another three minutes from time through Jed Wallace sealed a big win for the former Premier League side.

Daggers made three changes from the side which lost 2-0 at Wycombe with the suspended Scott Doe, Matt Saunders and Billy Bingham making way for Luke Wilkinson, Sean Shields and Chris Dickson.

For the first 30 minutes of the game it was almost a non-event for the hosts as Pompey clearly wanted it more.

Daggers failed to clear their lines at a corner just two minutes in and Danny Hollands headed against the post.

It was an early warning sign that they didn’t learn from as a minute later as another fell to Hollands who slotted past Lewington.

It could have been worse on the 10 minute mark when a short corner took them by surprise and it found Hollands on the edge of the box, but this time his shot was saved by Lewington.

The onslaught continued to come and the Daggers couldn’t string two passes together.

Pompey got a deserved second on 21 minutes when a poor back header from Wilkinson saw Jed Wallace run on to the loose ball and he chipped the ball over Lewington to an unmarked Michael Drennan at the back post, who slotted home from close range.

Twice Pompey had chances to make it 3-0 as Wallace’s left-footed shot from just outside the box struck the post and then a Drennan header was cleared off the line by Jack Connors.

The visitors could, and probably should have home and dry, but somehow the Daggers did get themselves back into the game.

A good ball through found Medy Elito and his effort was saved by Trevor Carson in the Pompey goal.

But skipper Abu Ogogo was following up and headed over Carson for his ninth of the season.

Ryan Taylor, the double scorer for Rotherham in Daggers’ League Two play-off final win, had a fine chance to restore Pompey’s two-goal cushion, but his deflected effort fell just wide of the target.

The hosts were slowly getting themselves into the game and on the stroke of half time had a great opportunity to level.

Elito’s free-kick found the head of Wilkinson but that struck the bar and fell to Brian Saah a few yards out, but his shot struck the post.

Daggers still had a fighting chance despite not playing anywhere near the best, however, any hopes of a comeback were extinguished on 57 minutes.

A great cross field from first half substitute Rhys McCabe found Drennan with the ball on the left and he produced a fine finish past Lewington from 20 yards.

Ryan Taylor was denied a fourth as his header from Holmes’ pin point ball in was gathered by Lewington.

And with time ticking away it only got worse. Wilkinson was beating to the ball by McCabe who pulled the ball back for Wallace who slotted home past an onrushing Lewington.

Dagenham & Redbridge: Lewington, Hoyte, Saah, Wilkinson, Connors, Elito, Howell (Obafemi 80), Ogogo, Shields (Azeez 62), Norris (D’Ath 19), Dickson.
