Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett expected better from experienced centre half Scott Doe after his first-half dismissal changed the complexion of the game in their 2-0 loss at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Doe grabbed hold of Chairboys striker Steven Craig’s neck after he’d left his foot in on Daggers goalkeeper Chris Lewington.

At the time the score was still 0-0 and Burnett felt his side were comfortable. However, after the dismissal the Daggers conceded a minute into the second half via a Craig penalty, a decision Burnett disagreed with.

Max Kretzschmar added a second to seal the defeat, their first in nine games, and had Doe not been sent off, the Daggers boss felt his side were in little danger of conceding.

“I am disappointed in Doey,” said Burnett. “I’ve told him that I am extremely disappointed. He tried to justify it but there’s no excuse, it was a sending off.

“I have got no problems with the sending off, if you raise your arms that’s what happens. It changed the complexion of the game and it isn’t like him to get so enraged.

“I didn’t think we looked in any danger at all, we were moving the ball quite nicely and I didn’t think they could get near us at times.”

And while Doe’s dismissal did frustrate Burnett, he felt Wycombe were far from saints in the situation.

The experienced centre half reportedly had a mark on his nose from a headbutt, with Craig and former Dagger Stuart Lewis also involved in the incident, while Lewington wasn’t unscathed either.

“I am disappointed by the way Scott reacted,” he added.

“Was he headbutted? Yes he was. He has got a bruise and a cut on the bridge of his nose. Chrissy Lewington has got a stud mark down the side of his neck from the challenge as well.”

Lewis was also involved in the penalty incident a minute after the break, as Brian Saah was adjudged to have brought the midfielder down.

And Burnett was left angered by the decision to award the spot kick.

“Players couldn’t understand why the penalty was given,” he said. “We were as shocked and baffled as everyone else. “

Doe’s sending off did bring about the debut of youngster Ian Gayle, and along with the return of Matt Saunders, the Daggers chief felt they were two of very few positives to come out of the game.

“Ian Gayle did all right,” remarked Burnett. “He made his debut and he’s a young lad. We was joking before the game ‘how much longer you going to be here before making the debut’ and he managed to come in and do all right.

“I thought Matt started well. He played a great ball in after two minutes, he made a tackle and then put a great free-kick in and we have one cleared off the line.”
