League Two: Dagenham & Redbridge 1 Plymouth Argyle 2
In a repeat of the scoreline at Home Park, Daggers fell to 2-1 defeat against Plymouth Argyle, with Lewis Alessandra netting the winner for the Pilgrims.
Reuben Reid had put the visitors in front after five minutes, though Zavon Hines did level for Wayne Burnett’s side.
However, Alessandra netted the winner from close range on 33 minutes and the disappointing Daggers failed to test Pilgrims goalkeeper Jake Cole too often as they slipped to 12th in the League Two table.
Daggers made two changes from the side that drew 1-1 at Burton Albion last weekend, with Brian Saah in for the suspended Jack Connors and Zavon Hines started ahead of Medy Elito.
Only five substitutes could be listed by the hosts such were their injury and suspension problems though.
Scott Doe was at left back and it was his foul which gave the Pilgrims a chance to break the deadlock with a fifth minute free-kick.
And they did just that as Plymouth skipper Connor Hourihane’s effort took Daggers goalkeeper Chris Lewington by surprise and it struck the post.
But it came back out into the area and Reuben Reid was on hand to fire home for his 15th goal of the season.
It was a sloppy start from the hosts, and Alessandra saw another effort deflected behind for a corner.
Daggers broke on the counter attack from the resulting dead ball through Hines but he decided to go it alone and he lost possession despite options out wide.
However he made amends on 22 minutes when he supplied the finish to Ade Azeez’s centre for his eighth goal of the season.
And in a nice touch Hines raised a shirt with “Bill Edmans 87” on the back in memory of their former kit man who passed away last Saturday.
But parity only lasted 11 minutes and Alessandra was the man to put Plymouth back in front when he slotted home Matthew Parsons cross from the right.
Daggers had wanted a foul on Gavin Hoyte from Andres Gurrieri in the build-up, but nothing was forthcoming from referee Michael Naylor.
It was Argyle who started the second half brighter as well and almost capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Lewington and Gavin Hoyte.
The pair almost collided and Reid was there, only for his effort to hit Hoyte. The ball fell kindly to Parsons though and his shot was inches away from finding the target.
Daggers were on the front foot for most of the half though, however struggled to break down a rugged Pilgrims defence.
A great run from half time substitute Medy Elito saw the winger feed Rhys Murphy, but his flicked shot went straight into the hands of Plymouth goalkeeper Jake Cole.
The Daggers enjoyed a plethora of corners as the half wore on and another was earned by Hines after his ball into the box was put behind.
They were failing to test Cole too much though as Curtis Nelson put in a great block on Hines with the striker bearing down on goal.
Hines went close again as the game entered the final 10 minutes in a goalmouth scramble, but Plymouth were able to clear the danger away.
The day was summed up for the hosts as Elito fired well over from distance, before former Dagger Marvin Morgan missed a chance to wrap up the victory for Plymouth when firing wide from close range in time added on.
