The football action may now be over, but the future of several players at Dagenham & Redbridge will be decided in the next few days.

Boss Wayne Burnett began talks with his squad today, which will continue tomorrow as he hopes to build on a fine ninth-place finish in League Two this season.

There are nine players out of contract in June – goalkeepers Chris Lewington and Jordan Seabright, defenders Gavin Hoyte and Femi Ilesanmi and strikers Chris Dickson, Afolabi Obafemi, Zavon Hines, Alex Osborn and Bradley Goldberg.

Seabright has been given his chance in recent weeks ahead of Lewington, which may suggest the latter is off to pastures new, but Burnett admitted it will be a busy few days.

“There won’t be anyone going away on holiday just yet,” said Burnett. “We have meetings with the players in the early part of the week. It’s inevitable in the industry we are in that some players will come and go.

“All the players have done extremely well, but the hard work starts now.”

Burnett has identified areas where he can strengthen over the summer but although there will be some money available to invest in the team, he admits they will have to bide their time in the transfer market.

He added: “There will be an enormous amount of players available in the summer. We don’t go into the market early because we cannot compete from a financial point of view so it’s pointless us even trying to get the targets we want because the teams with more money go and get them.

“We’ll have to wait and see what is around. But we will have some money, not to buy anyone, but we’ll have money to bring some new players in because we’ve managed to clear the decks from last year.

“There will be some players coming in and inevitably some players going, but hopefully we can strengthen a little.”
