Sky Bet League Two: Dagenham & Redbridge 2 Bury 1
Daggers kept up their unbeaten record at Victoria Road with a 2-1 victory over Bury as they survived a nervy final few minutes
Afolabi Obafemi netted his first for the club two minutes before the break to put Wayne Burnett’s side in front two minutes before the break and Rhys Murphy scored his fourth of the season early in the second half.
But Anton Forrester ensured a nervy final few minutes when he slotted home an 87th minute penalty following Billy Bingham’s handball, though the Daggers just held out.
Burnett opted to keep faith with the same team which drew 2-2 at Morecambe, but in truth it was a very poor opening period.
Zavon Hines had appeals waved away for a penalty after he was brought down by Shaun Beeley but other then that it was a dire opening period with two weak Craig Jones headers easily held by Daggers goalkeeper Chris Lewington.
However, with two minutes of the half to play the hosts went in front with the only but of quality the game produced.
Gavin Hoyte played through Obafemi who took a touch before curling a left footed effort into the bottom corner past Bury keeper Trevor Carson.
It was the hosts that started the second half on top and put further daylight between them and Kevin Blackwell’s side with 52 minutes on the clock.
A lovely throughball from skipper Abu Ogogo found Rhys Murphy who coolly slotted it past an onrushing Carson.
Murphy almost had a second three minutes later when his flick header from a Zavon Hines free-kick was well pushed behind by the Bury keeper.
Blackwell made two substitutions for Bury and one, Jordan Sinnott, certainly gave them new life.
His free-kick from 25 yards out was well saved low down by Lewington, before he skied another effort over the bar after some good build up play from the visitors.
Lewington had to again be on top form with just six minutes remaining as he punched a fierce Sinnott drive out of danger.
But the visitors had a lifeline when Billy Bingham handled in the area, and Anton Forrester sent Lewington the wrong way from the penalty spot to set up an anxious finale.
It was all Bury unsurprisingly and skipper Gareth Roberts thundered an effort against the post before referee Brendan Malone blew for full time to the relief of the Daggers faithful.
