Dagenham & Redbridge striker Rhys Murphy has turned down Peterborough United after entering contract negotiations with them earlier in the week.

Former Arsenal youngster Murphy was in talks with Peterborough earlier in the week, after permission was granted reluctantly by the Daggers in accordance to a commitment made to the 23-year-old when he signed for the club back in the summer

But contract talks between Murphy and the Posh hit a snag and the striker will remain with the club, unless another team comes in for him between now and next Friday’s deadline.

A club statement read: “After various discussions by all parties it has become clear that Rhys does not wish to make such a move at this time and is more than happy to commit his playing future to the Daggers for the foreseeable future.

“In coming to this decision both the club and Rhys realise that if another opportunity presents itself then that opportunity will be made available to Rhys as is in this case.”

The club also re-iterated its stance in never standing in the way of a player moving on to a bigger club, if they deem an offer received to be acceptable.

The statement added: “Many players sign for the Daggers with the hope that we can help develop their game with the expectation that if they progress sufficiently they can aspire for bigger and greater things.

“The club has always made no secret that whilst trying to achieve the greatest success for the club as possible such improvement will always attract interest from bigger clubs and is in fact an integral part of the business model of the club. However we feel and hope that this decision by Rhys will mean that further success with the daggers will allow him to achieve even greater ambitions.”

Manager Wayne Burnett said: “It’s great news that Rhys has decided to stay with us. You never want to lose your best players and hopefully now he can continue his good start to his career with the club.”
