Daggers boss Burnett: You can become victims of your own success

Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett feels his side have been victims of their own success this season as they head into their final game of the League Two campaign tomorrow at Cheltenham Town.

The Daggers have disappointed of late, including home defeats to Portsmouth and Northampton Town, the latter a 3-0 loss last weekend and they entered the last month of the campaign with a slim chance of a play-off spot.

But that soon faded with just one win in five games and though many supporters would have been happy just for safety this season back in August when the season commenced, Burnett feels expectations of his side had been raised.

“You can become a victim of your own success. It baffles me sometimes,” said Burnett.

“Expectations grow in people and that is only natural. It’s human nature to want more, but had we been on 45 points with four games to go and won all four we’d be on 57 points. Many would have deemed that a success.”

Whatever the result tomorrow, Daggers will have finished on their third highest points tally since they came into the Football League.

That represents a big improvement on recent seasons, and they could go as high as ninth ifresults go their way, while if they don’t they may finish down in 16th. place

And while Burnett is buoyed by their away form since the turn of the year going into the game against the Robins, he knows improvements have to come at home next season.

“We have been doing alright away from home and we all want to finish the season on a high. It’d be nice to get the three points and get as high up the table as we can,” he added.

Burnett has experimented with his side in recent weeks with safety secured, but he refutes any allegations that some of the players are already in holiday mode.

“There is a platform to build on, but all the players and staff have been disappointed by the way we’ve played on some occasions recently,” he remarked.

“The home form has not been good and there is no hiding from the fact that since the turn of the year we should have done better at home.

“Some have said the players are already on holiday mode and that for me is utter rubbish. We just didn’t perform well against Portsmouth and Northampton.”
