Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett couldn’t hide his frustration after a poor performance against Plymouth Argyle yesterday.

Reuben Reid gave the Pilgrims a fifth-minute lead, and though Zavon Hines levelled, Lewis Alessandra went on to net what proved to be the winner.

The Daggers spent much of the second half on the front foot, but failed to cause Jake Cole a threat in the Plymouth goal and Burnett felt there was a distinct lack of quality about his side on the day.

“We conceded early on and it was an uphill battle from there,” said Burnett. “We managed to equalise and I thought ‘okay, here we go now, let’s get going’ but I don’t think we did.

“I don’t think it was for a lack of effort, I think it was a lack of quality today for us. The decision making wasn’t good.

“We are chasing the game and they’ve held on, fair play to them. We haven’t done enough to get back into the game, we’ve had one or two chances but they’ve sat deep and hit us on the counter at times.”

Burnett revealed they went into the game with the planning of pressing the Pilgrims, but he believed they very rarely did that.

In his eyes, the only one who could come out of the game with any credit was skipper Abu Ogogo.

“We worked a whole week on pressing, the first 20-25 minutes we were going to come out and work really hard and attack,” he said.

“Abs was the only one which started pressing and you can’t do it on your own. He got the man of the match award and rightly so.”

The Daggers have failed to win at home for five consecutive games now, and while performances have improved away from Victoria Road, the home form has deteriorated, much to Burnett’s annoyance.

“It’s bad. I am really disappointed,” he added. “I was disappointed with the Hartlepool game, I am the same today.

“We are just not performing and I don’t know why that is. You can see goals and they do change the complexion of the game but we need to be better.”
