Daggers boss Burnett laments poor performance against Portsmouth

Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett believed Saturday’s 4-1 home loss to Portsmouth was his worst since taking charge.

The Victoria Road hosts got off to a sloppy start as Danny Hollands and Michael Drennan put Pompey in command early on.

Abu Ogogo’s ninth of the season reduced the arrears, but a fine Drennan finish and a late strike from Jed Wallace sealed Daggers’ biggest defeat of the season.

And Burnett didn’t hold back his frustration at seeing his side put in a below-par performance, calling it his worst since he took the job last February.

“It’s the worst performance we have had, that and Mansfield away earlier in the season,” said Burnett.

“It resembled the Bristol Rovers game a little bit from last season, but I don’t think we played as badly against Bristol Rovers as we did today.”

Burnett had no complaints with the margin of defeat either, and knew it could have been a lot more for the hosts if Pompey had been even more clinical in front of goal.

“I just think that we didn’t start particularly well. We were not out of the traps, they pressed us and went 2-0 up early on,” he added.

“I think they outfought us, outworked us and were better in every department. When you give teams goal starts it is difficult to come back from, and that’s what we did.

“I have got no complaints, I cannot emphasise enough how much better they were than us. Let’s not go away from the fact that it could have been more than four.”

Daggers did pull it back to 2-1 through Ogogo, and even had a chance to go in level at the break.

Luke Wilkinson headed against the bar, and Brian Saah struck the rebound against the post.

That gave the hosts some hope at the interval, but that was all undone by a fine strike from Drennan after a lovely cross field ball from Rhys McCabe.

“We had hope but it didn’t materialise,” he remarked. “They got an excellent third goal from a fantastic finish by one of their players.

“Goals change games and if we get back at 2-2, even though we probably didn’t deserve to, it might have been a different game, but it wasn’t.”

Daggers brought on Lawson D’Ath for Luke Norris with only 17 minutes of the game gone.

As you would expect Norris wasn’t too pleased, but it was Burnett who admitted he got his tactics wrong going into the game.

“I will be held fully responsible because I picked the wrong team as well, but they were better than us,” he remarked.

“I’ve made a decision sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. I brought Luke Norris off for tactical reasons to put an extra man in midfield because they were running beyond us at times and we shored it up for a little while.

We got on the ball, started passing and moving it, but it wasn’t to be.”
