Dagenham & Redbridge may have added to their squad in the January transfer window, but the key bit of business was top goalscorer Rhys Murphy’s decision to turn down League One side Peterborough United.

The Victoria Road outfit brought in striker Luke Norris on loan from Brentford, while extending Lawson D’Ath’s spell at Daggers until the end of the season.

However, Murphy’s decision to commit his short-term future to the club was a massive boost for Burnett.

“You never want to lose your best players and there is no doubt that he’s one of our best players,” said the Daggers boss.

“Hopefully we can keep him – how long that is for I don’t know. When you have got players of his calibre they are always going to attract interest and we can’t do anything about that.”

But now the transfer window is closed, Burnett hopes the player can continue to find the back of the net regularly, even if he doesn’t play well.

“The transfer deadline has gone and he’s not gone anywhere. I didn’t want him to go anywhere and I made no secret of that,” he added.

“But the good thing is that he wanted stay and he said he was happy here. That shows in his performances.

“It had been a while for him since he scored and sometimes it becomes a concern, but he is quite headstrong.

“I sat down with him and said ‘stop trying to play well, everyone knows you are a good player’. He doesn’t remember how he played at York and AFC Wimbledon, but we all remember that he scored.”

Both loanees Norris and D’Ath have put in impressive performances of late, and the Daggers boss hopes they can continue to have a positive impact on the squad.

“I am glad we got Luke Norris in, I think he has been a good addition to our group,” he remarked.

“Lawson is growing all the time and I think he’s getting better. He showed what a good footballer he was at Rochdale.

“He’s very calm, has got great energy, works hard and is an incredibly good decision maker. That’s what we need in this team.”
