Daggers boss Burnett disappointed with Chesterfield blank

Chances were few and far between but Daggers boss Wayne Burnett felt his side should have picked up a point yesterday against promotion hopefuls Chesterfield.

Instead, Eoin Doyle’s 13th goal of the season in the first half sealed the win for the Spireites which moved them closer to securing League One football for next season.

And despite a frustrating afternoon where they lacked a killer instinct in front of goal, Burnett believed the Daggers had done enough to pick up a point.

“I think we tried to pass it and move it and probe, not as well as I’d have liked it, but I am disappointed we didn’t come away with a point,” said Burnett.

“We probably didn’t test their goalkeeper enough in the first half. I think we played in front of them a lot and didn’t really get going until we changed it. Before we did that we didn’t have much penetration and that’s disappointing.”

He added: “I didn’t think it was for the lack of effort today. I thought we worked hard and had one or two decent chances.

“Affy has had a shot deflected, Luke Norris has had a header he should have hit the target with.

“Really, they have had two shots at our goal. One came in the first half where they’ve scored and there was one in the second where Jordan has made the save.”

Burnett made four changes to the side which won 1-0 at Torquay United on Good Friday, giving the likes of goalkeeper Jordan Seabright the opportunity to impress as he looks to secure a new contract at the club.

And the Daggers chief was more than happy with the display put in by the 19-year-old.

“I thought he did all right actually,” he added. “He made one or two decent saves, he has distributed reasonably well, so I don’t think he has done himself any harm whatsoever.

“There are a number of players out of contract and you have got to give them an opportunity,” said the Daggers boss.

“You give people the opportunity and you have got to come to the party. No disrespect to our players, but we bring on Sean Shields and Affy Obafemi, and they bring on Gary Roberts and Jay O’Shea.

“Have my players got the potential to be as good as those? Of course they have. Chesterfield have got depth in their squad. That’s why they are towards the top of the league.”
