Dagger Hines thrives on the attention, and expects Burton Albion to be no different

Dagenham & Redbridge striker Zavon Hines knows he’s the main target other teams tend to focus on, but he admits he thrives off the challenge he faces week in week out, as they head into their clash at Burton Albion tomorrow.

The Victoria Road side disappointed last time out against Hartlepool United, losing 2-0, but the former West Ham youngster is keen to put that result behind them and fully concentrate on the task in hand against the fifth-placed Brewers.

“We are all hurting from last Saturday’s game and performance so we are fully focused on coming back with the three points,” said Hines. “We didn’t think Hartlepool were better than us, but we didn’t do enough to win the game so we can’t really complain.”

Hines has been an almost ever-present in the Daggers team aside from the one-game ban he picked up for his fifth yellow card of the season against Chesterfield at the end of December.

Although he has enjoyed his time at Victoria Road, he feels he hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks.

“I started well, but in the last three games I feel I haven’t performed as well as I have before,” he added.

“I want to be effective, but I know if I am not having a good game I have to work hard for the team and that’s an important part of being a footballer. That’s something I have learnt to bring into my game.”

Most opposition teams see the tricky player as the one to watch, which often sees him heavily marked throughout the game.

He normally has two or three men surrounding him whenever he has the ball, while he is also the target of stick from the home fans whenever the Daggers are on the road.

And though that is a tough challenge, it’s one he looks forward to each and every week, though, does admit he can go overboard on occasions with his tricks.

“I have spoken to friends who play for the other teams and they say their manager tells them as soon as I get the ball to get two or three men on me,” he remarked.

“I am used to that now, but the gaffer has said I should take that as a compliment and I do because if a team is trying to focus on you so that they can stop the team it shows that I am doing alright.”

The Daggers completed a fine double over promotion contenders Rochdale a fortnight ago, and will hope to add the Brewers to that list, having won the reverse fixture 2-0 at Victoria Road back in November.

Hines and Luke Howell were on target that day, and the 25-year-old hopes they can keep up their good record against the top sides, though he knows they have to become more consistent if they want to breach the eight points between themselves and the play-off places.

“Our form has been inconsistent of late, we’ve beaten the strong teams, but not done so well against the teams below us. If we want to try and go up and push for the play-offs we have got to start being more consistent.

“But we’ve got Burton in front of us this weekend and hopefully we can come back with the three points.”
