Hornchurch go into a vital week of action without Alex Bentley after the left back broke a metatarsal in the Essex Senior Cup semi-final against Braintree.

Last season’s player of the year has had another solid campaign to date and the news comes as a big blow to boss Jimmy McFarlane as Urchins prepare to welcome Leiston tomorrow before a big clash at Wealdstone on Monday.

“Alex will be a big loss for us,” said McFarlane. “He’s been playing well again, but it gives the opportunity for someone else to come in.

“I won’t be able to bring anyone else in to cover his loss, so we’ll have to go with what we have got. It’s not helped in these last few weeks that we haven’t had too many games, but they’re starting to stack up now.”

McFarlane saw his side’s trip to Carshalton fall foul to bad weather last weekend and Urchins now have only two free midweeks before they would have to start playing three games a week.

And the Bridge Avenue chief admits it is a big worry, adding: “The problem is Maidstone have been able to play games, so they won’t have the big backlog that some of the other sides have.

“We have a small squad as it is, so it’s going to be a big problem if we have a few more called off. It’s a big problem considering what we’re trying to achieve.”

McFarlane was optimistic tomorrow’s game will beat the weather, but it’s likely the club will have to make a decision today (Friday).

Another postponement will be less than ideal before the test against promotion rivals Wealdstone.

“They’ll be tough games and we always have a good battle against Wealdstone. But every game is important to us between now and the end of the season.”
