Steven Gerrard would not have a problem with Ashley Cole leading England out against Brazil to mark his 100th cap.
The Chelsea left-back will join an elite group of English players to have reached the milestone if he is selected to face the Samba Kings in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday.
Gerrard became the last and sixth member of that club in the friendly international against Sweden in Stockholm in November and the Liverpool skipper was last night crowned the Football Association’s England Player of the Year in a ceremony at the inaugural FA England awards ceremony at St George’s Park.
The midfielder said: “Ashley has been magnificent for England over many, many years.
“He certainly deserves to gets 100 caps and let’s hope he celebrates it with a win.
“Will I let Ashley lead the team out? I think decisions like that are down to the manager but I wouldn’t mind stepping aside at all.
“Ash is a team-mate of mine, we’ve shared a lot of caps together.”
Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta is a “massive doubt” for Sunday’s final day trip to Newcastle after limping off in Tuesday night’s 4-1 win over Wigan, manager Arsene Wenger has revealed.
