Hornchurch is once again home to one of the friendliest theatres in the entire country according to the results of a nationwide competition.

The Queen’s Theatre in Billets Lane, Hornchurch, is among 12 regional winners of the 2017 UK Theatre Awards, having been named The Most Welcoming Theatre in the East.

The theatre, which will be celebrating its 65th year in 2018, also scooped the same pretigious award last year.

Sponsored by Smooth Radio, the awards recognise theatres which pride themselves on excellent levels of customer service and providing members of the public with a warm and friendly welcome.

Mathew Russell, Queen’s Theatre executive director, said: “We are overjoyed to have retained our title as the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre in the East.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for us and to all the staff at the Queen’s Theatre, whose continuing dedication and professionalism has earned us this award.

“We’re making great developments to our rich programme of work, offering an increasingly diverse and affordable programme of quality entertainment all year round to appeal to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.”

Representatives from the theatre will now attend a glamorous awards ceremony on October 15 at London’s historic Guildhall to pick up their award and see the overall winner crowned.

More than 200,000 people take in shows at the theatre each year, with its learning and participation projects focussing on inspiring local talent, as well as attracting top quality touring shows and entertainment acts.

Behind the scenes, every show’s sets and costumes are lovingly created on-site by workers in the theatre’s highly skilled carpentry workshop by scenic artists, prop makers and a dedicated wardrobe team.

A Queen’s Theatre spokesman said: “This year’s nominations demonstrate the breadth and depth of outstanding talent and achievement in theatre and the performing arts throughout the United Kingdom, on and off stage.”

The full list of the UK Theatre Awards winners includes notable venues across the UK and more information on the competition can be found at www.uktheatre.org.
