The quest for Christmas chart success by internet music star Alex Day was taken up a notch this week.

The online sensation, who grew up in Hornchurch, released the video for his new single Stupid Stupid on Wednesday – and racked up more than 220,000 in the first 48 hours.

Former Emerson Park school pupil Alex reached number four last Christmas – a Guinness World Record for an unsigned artist – and hopes to better that by topping the chart this year.

Bookies Paddy Power rate him 45/1 to achieve the feat – ranking him ahead of major artists like Justin Beiber and Robbie Williams.

He’s joined in his festive new video by members of his family, who he dances around in various guises – including a mankini, the piece of revealing male swimwear made famous by Sacha Baron Cohen in the film Borat.

Alex told the Recorder that he is “really excited” about the interest in the song so far – which has sold hundreds of pre-ordered copies.

About getting his entire family involved in a video for the first time, he said: “They had a lovely time. It was great to have every generation - my grandparents right down to my six and seven-year-old cousins there with me and all of them loved the song.

“It’ll be a really nice thing to watch in years to come as our family grows and changes.”

The song, which Alex says is about embracing the flaws of the people you love, is extremely catchy and stays in your head after listening - as staff in the Recorder’s office have found.

But it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. When asked for the odds of his chart success, a Paddy Power spokesman said: “Let’s hope for everyone’s sake it doesn’t reach number one.”

The single is released on December 16 and will be available online and in HMV stores.
