PIE, mash and song were the order of the day at a slightly belated VE Day-themed party.

Regulars of the Brights Avenue Day Centre for the elderly, in Brights Avenue, Rainham, enjoyed a VE Day-themed party last Thursday afternoon (June 9).

Helpers served 64 guests traditional beef pie and mash, followed by a dessert of fruit trifle.

After the meal Chelmsford-based entertainers, Natalie and John, dressed in Pearly King and Queen costumes, put on a music show called Cockney Pride.

Guests danced and joined in singing wartime songs, accompanied by guitar, before rounding off the day with tea and cake.

The centre is run by national charity, Age Concern, and provides meals and daily activities for the elderly including day trips, quizzes, bingo sessions and art classes. It also offers hairdressing and toe-nail cutting services.

Marie Wheedon, a spokesman for the centre, said: "They had a fantastic time, and many were reminded of their younger days.

"They especially enjoyed singing and dancing to the songs.
